Why You Should Always Be Prepared For Next Job?

In this post, we are going to discuss why you should be prepared for your next job. You should be ready for a job change even if you have a good job. The reasons for that are,

Company can fire you any time

Yes, you read that right. That’s the harsh truth many won’t agree. Do you know what is the biggest expense for an IT company? It is Employee cost. So If a company starts making losses, they fire employees. Did you know that one popular company CEO fired 900 employees in Zoom call a month ago? To reduce expense, they fire highly-paid experienced employees and recruit freshers at very less package. There is no permanent job in any company unless it is a government job.

Company under pay you

Usually, companies underpay experienced employees.  You can’t expect a hike of more than 30% if you stay in the same company. During Job Switch hike percentage can range between 30% to even 200%. Companies even pay more for freshers because they stay longer in the company ( Around 2-3 years) compared to experienced ones. You can expect a good hike from your current employer only if you are getting a promotion.

You become outdated

Most employees work on the same tech stack (programming language, DBMS) for years. This will have a huge impact especially if you are looking for a job change.  Your experience is irrelevant in the market. The framework used might not be used by any other company. This will limit your switch to the company using that same tech stack. It is very hard to switch if you like to work in new technologies like python, ML, etc.

Work becomes boring

After doing some work for years, work becomes repetitive and boring. Learning usually drops after a certain point. People switch companies looking for better learning opportunities.  According to the Stackoverflow survey,  53% of employees reported opportunities to learn as the reason for a job change.

39% of employees looking for a job change to work with new technologies. 35% of employees looking for a job change for growth or leadership.   Read this article from StackOverflow for more statistics.

What you must do?

Be prepared even if you are not looking for a job change.  Do the following things mentioned below to get a better job where your expectations like salary, leadership role, learnings are met.

  • Build projects and showcase in Github.
  • Solve coding questions in sites like Leetcode, HackerEarth everyday or every week
